Johns grotto llc
About This Spot
Johns Grotto LLC feels like a quiet corner of the Oregon coast where time slows just enough to savor the rhythms of the sea. Settling into this family-friendly spot in Coos Bay, you’re met with an easygoing pace and a friendly warmth that echoes years of local tradition. The atmosphere carries a gentle hum—the clink of silverware, casual conversations, and the soft promise of fresh-caught seafood prepared with care.
This is a place where the menu unfolds like a familiar story, told through simple, honest flavors that reflect the bounty of the bay. Whether you’re enjoying a shared seafood pasta or savoring the subtle brine in a perfectly fried fish basket, each bite invites a connection to the coast’s heritage. The clam chowder, often nestled in a bread bowl, offers a comforting embrace, while oysters on the half shell and shrimp cocktails bring a refreshing nod to classic seaside indulgences.
There’s a distinct feeling of being welcomed not just as a customer, but as part of an ongoing conversation between the kitchen, the shore, and those who gather around the table. The presence of seasoned hands—like those of the longtime chef who carries forward a legacy from local institutions—infuses each meal with authenticity and a grounded sense of community.
Tucked into its bustling neighborhood corner, Johns Grotto is more than just a takeout stop or family diner. It’s a quiet invitation to pause, to enjoy the familiar comforts of coastal cooking, and to share moments that feel rooted in place and time—where every visit carries a subtle reminder of home at the water’s edge.

Interestingly, we stopped to see what they had to offer. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the fish baskets. The meat was juicy, and the deep fry of the fish was not overdone. We were so pleased we stopped on Monday for brunch and for dinner after spending the at Shore Acres and Pt. Aragon. Dinner was the Seafood Pasta. Oh my. What a meal. Nancy and I shared the meal and still took some home. If you are out Charleston way, stop in and enjoy some mighty fine dishes.

Best food truck in town! Fisherman's Grotto was an institution, out in Charleston, and when the owner retired, I was sad to lose it. But then John, the chef there, got his own food truck, just up the hill from the Hollering Place, he brought all the classics with him! Good prices, excellent food, and generous portions make this place a great roadside attraction. The corner can be difficult to get back into the road sometimes with traffic, but the parking lot is much larger than normally available for food trucks, so there's plenty of room, and John even has picnic tables for outdoor eating, and a bin to recycle your cans and bottles. The menu is not huge, but what is there is a hundred percent of the best stuff from the old Fisherman's Grotto, so I recommended trying literally everything!

The food was fresh and really good. You can get the bay shrimp on any of the salads for extra. The restraunt is large and not many people were in there. Second time stopping in and it's pretty good. The blackened oysters were not what we expected. We were expecting fried in a blackened seasoning. But they were sautéed in butter and blackened seasoning.

This our classic home style mom and pops restaurant that is our “go to” when in the area! We have always enjoyed this Coastal experience. Our waitress here at Fisherman’s Grotto was a beautiful person who brought a sense of calm to our experience even though she told us that she was flying to South Carolina to visit family later this evening!! Food was delicious and the hot chocolate as the highlight! Did I mention the clam chowder, very good?

I will never forget cleaning and prepping squid for my mom as she worked at fishermans grotto in the mall. This was one of coos bays best places to get Fresh of the boat seafood for many many years. Now you can still get there food through Jon who was a cook for them for many years. Jon himself will gladly strike up a conversation with you as he prepares your dilectable food.. so glad we can still get our favorite seafood!

The best shrimp fettuccine I have ever had. The 2nd best clam Chowder I have ever eaten. Fantastic seafood combo platter. Food is wildly good. Bad news: tonight 12/31/24 is there last night.

My sister and i stopped in for the first time ever! We have been on a mission to find THE BEST fish n chips on the coast! And believe me when i say, we have been to nearly EVERY place in search of the best! We finally found it! JOHN'S GROTTO!!! Fish is fresh and thick and tasty, not greesy! Portions are generous! Customer service is great! Food is delicious! Time between ordering and receiving our food was very readonable for fresh made food! We both live quite far from Coos Bay but JOHN'S GROTTO is worth every mile to get there! He doesn't disappoint! Stop in! You'll love it! Thank you John! We love you!
